Emma Pooley, the British lady living in Hausen am Albis in the canton Zurich and the Belgian Seppe Odeyn won on Sunday at the 28th Powerman Zofingen the 2016 ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships. Pooley sets a new record: She wins the world championship title for the third time in a row. There was no new track record this year. In the women’s race Emma Pooley/GBR (1.), Nina Brenn/CH (2.) and Susanne Svendsen/DEN (3.) made it for the podium. In the men’s race Seppe Odeyn/BEL (1.), Felix Köhler/GER (2.) and Søren Bystrup/DEN (3.) stepped on the podium. Over all there where around 1‘400 competitors over the whole Powerman Zofingen weekend which was about the same amount as last year.
«Soon I’ll reward meyself with walking holidays in the Pyrenees and tonight a glace of good red wine and some Swiss cheese aside», Emma Pooley said when she crossed the finishing line in Zofingen for the third time in a row as the winner of the world championships – a new record! This could have done also Gaël Le Bellec but the Frenchman could not start because of an injury.
Pooley was very strong on the bike where she was almost 20 minutes faster than the ladys just behind her. «I knew how big my lead was. Towards the end of the last running section I had to walk a bit to avoid falling on the floor. That I became now world champion for the third time in a row is unbelievable.»
Nina Brenn, coming in second, was talking of an impressive performance of Pooley. «I made my own race and my goal was to finish», so the Swiss lady who got her first medal in Zofingen. «When Emma Pooley attact on the bike, I had no chance to follow her, but now I know what I have to do better next year», said Brenn. Third became Susanne Svendsen from Denmark. Over a long time the Swiss Martina Krähenbühl was third, but once again the Swiss lady had to give up the race on the last running section.
After the area Vansteelant/Woestenborghs with Seppe Odeyn another powerman from Belgium stepped on top of the podium. «I want to finish in the Top-20», he said just before the race. «For me it was a perfect race and a wonderful day», he said after having crossed the finishing line first. It was his first victory in Zofingen at his third appearance. 5 minutes behind him came the German Felix Köhler. Third place went, once again, to the Dane Søren Bystrup. Best Swiss racer was Andy Sutz who won the Powerman Zofingen twice.
Best race ever
Very lucky was John Raadschelders, the president oft he IPA (International Powerman Association). «These were the best world championships ever, everything was perfect!» Also very pleased with the Powerman Zofingen weekend was Stefan Ruf, the president oft he local organising committee: «We had around 1‘400 people starting which is about the same as last year. Especially the Powerman CHARITY was a big success because with 200 participants we could double the number of last year. I was very lucky that Natascha Badmann, the six times Ironman Hawaii winner was doing the 5 km run as well.»
After 1997, 1998, 1999, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 the ITU (International Triathlon Union) and the IPA (International Powerman Association) present in Zofingen for the ninth time together the ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships. On the 4th of September 2016 Emma Pooley from Great Britain, living in Switzerland and the Frenchman Gaël Le Bellec can try to defend their world championship title in Zofingen. Due to the athletes who will start for sure, it’s clear already: The 28th Powerman Zofingen has the potential to be the best race ever. In the women’s and in the men’s race already now 70 % of the top-ten concerning the actual world ranking of the Powerman series have signed-in for Zofingen.
Since 2005 the number of participants at the Powerman Zofingen is going up and up every year. This time it could be for the first time a number which is clearly over 1‘500 participants. Over the long distance the goal of the organizers are 500 participants. But this year moreover the quality and not the quantity will be the main topic. In the men’s and in the women’s race there are as many favourites starting as never before. On the most beautiful, well-known but also toughest duathlon track in the world (10 km running, 150 km cycling and once again 30 km running) on the 4th of September 2016 the daylight party will really rock.
2014 and 2015 the duo Emma Pooley/Gaël Le Bellec achieved something nobody else was able to do before in a world championship race in Zofingen: The two managed as newcomers to win first the world championship title and they could defend it both in the following year. Yes, but … you might say now. Yes, in the history of Powerman Zofingen there were a few athletes who could win several times in a row, but there wasn’t a duo before which could together defend their world championship title in the same years. Here are the men who could win several times in a row in Zofingen: Olivier Bernhard (SUI) (1998 – 2002), Benny Vansteelant (BEL) (2005/06), Joerie Vansteelant (BEL) (2011/12). And here are the women: Natascha Badmann (1996/97), Karin Thürig (SUI) (2001/02), Erika Csomor (HUN) (2004 – 2010), Eva Nyström (SWE) (2012/13). So, Pooley and Le Bellec made history already.
Pooley for the third time
In the women’s race everything else than the third world championship title in a row for Emma Pooley would be a surprise. Being asked about her goal for Zofingen this year the lady from Great Britain, living near Zürich, just says: «Victory». And talking about a new track record (Pooley did it in 2014 in 6:47.27): «It’s gone be difficult but it’s possible, but not in first place for me.» Pooley at the Olympics 2016 in Rio was doing a lot of leading work in the beginning of the road race. Behind the British woman with the German Julia Viellehner, the Dane Susanne Svendsen, the Swiss Nina Brenn and the two newcomers Airi Sawada (JAP) and Miriam Van Reijen (NED) there are quite a lot of favourites for the two remaining places on the podium. This year in Zofingen not at the starting line will be Eva Nyström from Sweden (on the 12th of May 2016 she became mother of a second child called Julia) and Erika Csomor (the seven times Powerman Zofingen winner from Hungary promissed, that she will return to Zofingen once again in the following years).
Many favourites in the men’s race
In the men’s race everything is possible. That this is a fact, this proves the title holder Gaël Le Bellec who says: «A place on the podium would be great this year.» The Dane Søren Bystrup and the Belgian Seppe Odeyn want to win for sure on the 4th of September 2016. After his break last year the Frenchman Yannick Cadalen is back on the track in Zofingen. «The level on the cycling track with Gaël Le Bellec, Søren Bystrup, Seppe Odeyn and hopefully with me is very high and this makes a prognosis for the world championship title especially difficult. May the best win!» Always good for a surprise is the Australian Thomas Bruins who will start in Zofingen for the first time. This spring he could beat easily Le Bellec at the Powerman Malaysia. Only at the beginning of August the Swiss Andy Sutz has decided to start at the 28th Powerman Zofingen. Because of big problems with his hips the winner of the Powerman Zofingen in 2008 and 2010 could start practising again only a few weeks ago. The field of the favourites even bigger could make the Frenchman Anthony Le Duey (winner Powerman Austria 2016 and second at the Powerman Germany 2016 in Ulm). From the top athletes in Zofingen will only be missing for sure the Belgian Kenneth Vandendriessche, who as a professional will more foccus on triathlon.
In the women’s and in the men’s race already now 70 % of the top-ten concerning the actual world ranking of the Powerman series have signed-in for Zofingen. With Susanne Svendsen (DEN), Nina Brenn (SUI), Emma Pooley (GBR), Julia Viellehner (GER), Miriam Van Reijen (NED), Katrin Esefeld (GER) and Airi Sawada (JPN) the top-7 will be for sure in Zofingen. With Gaël Le Bellec (FRA), Seppe Odeyn (BEL), Søren Bystrup (DEN), Thomas Bruins (AUS), Julian Lings (GBR), Diego Van Looy (BEL) and Felix Köhler (GER) in the men’s race the world numbers 1,2, 4,5, 8,9 and 10 are starting definitely.
